Below you will find information pertaining to the opportunity to serve as a Chaplain in our program.  If you are interested in participating, please fill out the online application.  This is located at the bottom of this page.  The Chaplain Coordinator/Liaison will contact you once the application has been received.


ELIGIBILITY

– Requirements for participation as a chaplain for the Department(s) may include, but are not limited to:


a.  Be above reproach, prudent, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, teachable, humble, and free from addiction to alcohol or other drugs, and free from excessive debt.


b.    Be able to handle their own personal relationships, marriage, their household, family, friends, and their personal affairs with integrity.


c.    Be a resident of the State of New Mexico and possess a valid driver’s license.


d.    Be an ordained member of the Clergy and be in good standing and endorsed for the chaplaincy program by a recognized religious denomination, with a minimum of three years’ experience or waiver by the Chief of Police or Fire Chief.


e.    Maintain high spiritual and moral standards.


f.     Possess sufficient experience in pastoral and parish work in order to cope with the spiritual emotional, and social needs of the members of the department and community.


g.    Conform to all departmental policies, procedures, rules, and regulations that pertain to the Chaplaincy program.


h.    Successful completion of an appropriate-level background investigation


i.     Be willing and available to respond to any situation where the presence of a chaplain is requested.


j.     Be willing to be involved in training that would enhance efficiency in meeting and dealing with the role and function of a chaplain.

The Chief of Police or Fire Chief may apply exceptions for eligibility based on organizational needs and the qualifications of the individual.


Chaplain candidates shall successfully complete the following process prior to appointment as a chaplain.

  • a)     Must be at least 25 years of age.
  • b)    Submit the appropriate online application.  Located at the bottom of this page.
  • c)     Include a recommendation from employers or volunteer programs.
  • d)    Interview with the Chief of Police/Fire Chief/and or the Chaplain Coordinator
  • e)    Successfully complete an appropriate-level background investigation and must never have been convicted of a felony offence or offences involving moral turpitude.
  • f)      Complete a six month probationary period as designated by the Chief of Police or Fire Chief. 

 

Chaplains are volunteers and serve at the discretion of the Chief of Police or Fire Chief.  Chaplains shall have no property interest in continued appointment.  However, if a chaplain is removed for alleged misconduct, the chaplain will be afforded an opportunity solely to clear his/her name through a liberty interest hearing, which shall be limited to a single appearance before the Chief of Police/Fire Chief, or the authorized designee.
